Green spaces to enjoy in Hackney

This past year has been all about socialising outdoors. Whether you’re going for a stroll or settling down for a picnic with 5 other friends, parks are the go-to for socialising. Outdoor spaces are also great for your mental health, as a bit of fresh air and greenery will help reduce any stress you may be feeling. This blog will tell you some of the best green spaces to go to from Old Street.
Just a 5 minute walk from HYELM Old Street, Shoreditch Park is the closest green area you can get to. It is one of Hackney’s largest parks, and has plenty of amenities such as a football and rugby pitch, a beach volleyball court, a giant boulder for rock climbing, an amphitheatre and a TfL cycle hire docking station, to name a few. Why not head over with some friends and make a day of it?
Rosemary Gardens is just an 11 minute walk away from HYELM Old Street. It has a large, flood-lit football pitch, tennis courts and basketball hoops. There is also a grass meadow which is perfect for picnics and relaxing.
A slightly longer 20 minute walk away, Finsbury Square is the perfect size for a picnic or a six person match of football. At 1.7 acres it’s a pretty small patch of grass, but does have a six-rink grass bowling green and a great café in the centre, where you can get takeaway food and drink.
After a 20 minute walk or 8 minutes on the bus you’ll find Haggerston Park. The Park has a green flag award, meaning it is a very well managed green space. It has a small but luxuriant nature reserve and a number of football pitches. There is also a BMX cycle track and an athletics track.
If you’re feeling a little more adventurous why not try a cycle over to London Fields. It’s a vast green space with lots of good spots for picnics or organised sports — you can easily spend the whole day there. Amenities include a cricket pitch, outdoor gym, tennis courts, a pétanque area, a lido, a cafe and toilets.
Wherever you decide to go we hope you enjoy reconnecting safely with friends and loved ones in the outdoors.
74 of the 125 bed spaces are reserved for key workers. If you are a key worker, you can find out more and register your interest using the London Mayor’s Share to Buy website.
